James Philip Cunningham
5/1/1948. - 7/8/2025
James Cunningham, 77, of Laguna Niguel, passed away on July 8, 2025. He was born on May 1, 1948. He is the oldest of 8 children. He served 3 years in the Army where he was a medic in the Vietnam War. He met his beloved wife, Elsie, on a blind date and he knew almost immediately they would marry. He worked hard to provide for his family. He and his wife ran their own bread business for many years providing their two children with an excellent education. He enjoyed sports, including bowling, participating in numerous leagues. He also took pride in becoming an assistant coach on his daughter’s soccer team and cheering on his son from the bleachers during his football games. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Elsie (Vasquez) Cunningham, his two children Chad (Audra) Cunningham, Melissa (Edward) Zykan, and his grandchildren, Grace Haywood, Charlotte Cunningham and Jack Zykan. His death was preceded by his mother, Joyce, and his brother, Jerry. As heartbroken as all his family is over his passing, we are comforted knowing he is no longer suffering. He will be laid to rest at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego.
